Shield Plus Vs Glock 43x
Since the launch of Sig P365, Sig has been continuously developing the P365 platform. As a natural continuation of P365 from customer input, P365X was born. The P365X has the same barrel and slide length as the original P365 while holding the same 12 round mags. A unique feature of the P365X is the built-in mag that fires well.

Of all the guns on our list, Smith & Wesson has the longest tradition of making a sleek and concealable handgun with its original M&P Shield. The improved design of the M&P Shield Plus was directly related to customers' desire for more capacity and a similar size for a handgun. Following on from the great success of the original M&P Shield, the M&P Shield Plus is the ultimate in concealed carry.
Glock gained a ton of traction with the release of their G43 model. With consumers wanting to pack more rounds in a small and concealed hand, the Glock 43X was launched. The G43X MOS departs from the G43 in terms of its grip length and support rail. The G43X sports 10 round flush mags with 4 extra rounds and a long grip to help with recoil control. With Glocks reputation for reliability and strong aftermarket support, it's easy to see any Glock model as the ultimate in concealed carry.
When Springfield brought the Hellcat to market in 2019, they already had several other guns to compete with. Since its inception, the Hellcat has been one of the best sellers when it comes to the category of concealed carry handguns. Some of the major features of the Hellcat are the excellent stock grip and the smooth stock trigger.
It's no surprise that the Glock 19 is on our top 5 list. For many the Glock 19 was the standard “do it all” compact handgun. Of all handgun manufacturers Glock has the largest aftermarket support when it comes to parts and accessories. While the G19 is the largest handgun on our list, it is still one of the most popular concealed carry guns.

For nearly a decade now, Smith & Wesson's M&P9 Shield has been one of the best of the lot. The most popular micro-compact concealed carry pistol on the market, and for good reason. The latest TTAG review for the Shield was Dan's 2018 test drive of the new 2.0 flavor, which received four and a half stars. And guess what? This last star has been received with the release of the M&P9 Shield Plus line.
In the video above, I think it's clear how impressed I am with the Shield Plus. This is one hell of a shooter. But what, exactly, is the M&P9 Shield Plus, you ask?
Take everything you love about the Shield series and increase the capacity to 10+1 with a flush magazine and 13+1 with a pinky extension mag (the original Shield holds 7+1 and 8+1 rounds respectively), changing the grip slightly. Texture So be kind to your love handles, and upgrade the trigger to an awesome level and make yourself a shield plus.
Dan "Hand Model" Zimmerman and I are testing the new Shield Plus in its most basic form - no protection, 3-dot area - but the entire line will be available in "Plus" format.
M&p Shield 9/40
A four-inch operations center model with a ported barrel, fiber optic sights, and a cut optic slide with a crimson trace reflex sight? yes
Between that and the 3.1-inch plain Jane model seen here, there are of course options ranging from night sights to fiber optics to optic cut slides, mounted and standard barrels, thumb safety and no safety, and preference. Every option is available for those up to a 10-pound trigger. A heavy draw on their guns (if you want to go as far as the NYPD).
As it stands, the trigger on this little guy is the best I've pulled from any compact handgun. It's incredibly bright with minimal creep, minimal variability, and a compact, cool sound and responsive setup. The blade safety (which replaced the Shield's center-pivoting trigger shoe) is nice and wide, and only flush with the curved face when depressed. The entire trigger package looks and feels great.
Shooting and dry shooting back with a SIG P365 and a Springfield Hellcat, augmented with an aftermarket trigger, remember, the S&W M&P9 Shield Plus was the hands-down trigger pull quality winner of the group. Crisper and cleaner with less creep than the other two, with less brake weight, and a shorter reset too. that's nice.

Add to that the ergonomic and comfortable, perfectly palm-fill-grip shape and dead-on-perfect grip texture, and this bad boy is one hell of a shooter. It is as planted and focused in my grip as a factory gun gets.
Despite its light weight, the micro-compact pistol made absolutely no effort—not a hint—to roll or move in my grip. Not only is the Shield Plus optimized for its action time and spring design, but its grip shape and texture make it one of the most manageable, compact pistols.
At first I thought the grip would be wide enough to fit a thick magazine, but it isn't. Smith & Wesson gained room for additional capacity by adding a shorter magazine follower to the spring design and/or opening the grip frame internally without changing it externally.
Frankly, there isn't much to add to Dan's late-2018 Shield 2.0 review beyond a minor grip tweak, a better trigger, and, frankly, extra 9x19mm rounds. The Shield Plus is functionally identical in every other way.
What Are The Best M&p Shield 9mm Accessories?
Next to my SIG P365 on the right is a Shield Plus on the left. You have to say, the comparison in the photo seems to be a big difference compared to real life, but there is no doubt that the touch itself is very good. It's obviously thicker, but it's much longer front to back and longer, (probably half an inch longer at the backstrap with the magazine flush).
The extra length at the back is part of the reason it shoots so well. It fills the hand better than the smaller grip on the P365.
Springfield is close in length ahead of the Hellcat. I definitely preferred the rounded shape of the Shield Plus grip over the blocky Hellcat grip. The Shield Plus' 18-degree grip angle and palm swelling are also good.
Before we send this loaner gun back to Smith, I'm going to get a holster for it and see how it holds and conceals compared to the P365. I already know I can shoot it like a full size pistol, but with a longer backstrap and a different grip angle I'd like to see how it conceals me.

There is no doubt, that the M&P Shield series has been one of the best-selling (over 3 million Shields sold according to Smith & Wesson), the most popular concealed carry pistol line on the market for nearly a decade now. , so we all know very well that this is a little hidden package. I'll have to try this...you know...science.
Should my P365 be afraid? Well, maybe a little. Now that the M&P Shield is back in the fray with some serious competition in the form of the Shield Plus, it is once again a prime contender for my IWB.
Dan and I spent most of the day shooting the S&W M&P9 Shield Plus, and we found it to be an excellent little gun in every way. In Dan's 2018 review the Shield left half a star on the table, but the Shield Plus easily took it away.
MSRP: $553 (top version with ported barrel and crimson trace optic is $925. Find the entire Shield Plus line at Brownells here, at the time of writing,
